Cool Down With an Iced Coffee Shakerato

Bongiorno! I didn’t see you there. Oh, might you be admiring this elegant beverage I’m sipping? Why yes, it IS quite refreshing.

Allow me to introduce the iced coffee shakerato. Hailing from Italy, this spruced-up iced coffee alternative will send your energy up and your temperature down. Plus, its name is very fun to say. Impress coworkers when you flounce by their desks holding your little glass of bliss, and they say, “What’s that?” and you get to say, “An iced coffee shakerato.” For those new to this word, it’s pronounced SHAH-kay-RAH-toe. Be sure to elongate that third syllable like a real Italian speaker would: shakeraaaaaaato.

YOU WILL NEED:

  • a cocktail shaker
  • ice cubes
  • a cocktail strainer (or a slotted spoon)
  • a tall glass, filled with more ice
  • a straw (preferably not a plastic one — save the ocean!)
  • 1½ ounces espresso or 3 ounces very strong coffee, cooled slightly
  • 1 tablespoon sweetened condensed milk
  • 1½ teaspoons simple syrup

In the cocktail shaker, mix the espresso, simple syrup, and condensed milk. Add ice, close the shaker, and shake intensely for 30 seconds.

This should result in a very frothy consistency. Next, using the strainer or spoon, pour your creation into a glass filled with ice. Add a straw, and voila! The classiest iced java you’ve ever seen. Ciao, bella.
